The Gulf of Mexico: Journey Through Time 🌊

The Gulf of Mexico: Journey Through Time 🌊

Did you know the Gulf of Mexico was formed over 150 million years ago during the breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea? As the Atlantic Ocean expanded, a massive basin developed, eventually filling with water and becoming the Gulf we know today.

For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples such as the Maya, Calusa, and Karankawa lived along the Gulf, relying on its rich waters for fishing, trade, and transportation. Spanish explorers like Ponce de León and Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca arrived in the early 1500s, mapping the coastline and establishing settlements in places like Florida, Texas, and Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

Today, the Gulf of Mexico is one of the world’s most important bodies of water, supporting diverse marine life, major trade routes, and some of the best beachcombing spots! 🌊🐚🏖️

Have you ever found a special treasure along the Gulf’s shores? Share your stories in the comments! ⬇️✨
